From Your Spice Rack to Your Skin — How Black Pepper Powers the PBX Standard
Black pepper isn’t in our formulas for warmth. It’s there because of what it breaks down into — and what those pieces do once they’re on your skin.
Black Pepper → Piperine: The Absorption Enhancer
Piperine is the compound that gives black pepper its bite, and it’s one of the most well-documented bioavailability boosters in natural-compound research. This isn’t a new discovery, either — it’s the same reason a pinch of black pepper is traditionally added to turmeric in cooking, and why Ayurvedic medicine has paired the two for centuries: piperine measurably improves how well the body absorbs and uses compounds from the food it’s mixed with, not just isolated extracts in a lab.
The classic human study (Shoba et al., 1998) found that just 20mg of piperine increased curcumin’s bioavailability by 2,000% — by inhibiting the enzymes that normally break these compounds down before the body can use them. A separate human clinical trial on pediatric patients recovering from oral surgery found that a piperine-combined curcumin patch produced a greater analgesic effect than a curcumin-only patch (PMC, 2024).
That absorption-boosting mechanism isn’t compound-specific — it’s been shown to work the same way for resveratrol, CoQ10, beta-carotene, and other nutrients, whether they come from a supplement or straight off your dinner plate. We haven’t seen it tested directly on CBD or CBG, so we won’t claim it’s proven — but the same broad mechanism is exactly why we build black pepper into formulas meant to go deep, not just formulas meant to warm.

Black Pepper → Beta-Caryophyllene: The Cannabinoid Connection
Here’s the part most people don’t expect: black pepper essential oil is roughly 30% beta-caryophyllene by content — actually higher than cannabis essential oil itself (around 23.8%). Beta-caryophyllene is the dominant terpene across virtually every cannabis and hemp strain, and it’s the one terpene known to act directly on the CB2 receptor — the same receptor system CBD engages through its own separate pathway (PPARγ). Research on human skin cells found CBD and beta-caryophyllene reducing inflammation through these two distinct mechanisms at once, producing a stronger combined effect than either compound alone (Landucci et al., 2024).

Where This Shows Up in the PBX Standard
Deep Muscle Body Balm XL is the clearest example — black pepper is a named ingredient here, so you get both mechanisms directly: piperine’s absorption assist alongside beta-caryophyllene’s CB2 activity.
Arti-Rub XL and Sport Rub XL carry the same beta-caryophyllene — steam-distilled from black pepper as its own isolated ingredient — engaging CBD through that same CB2 pathway.
The Bigger Picture
Beta-caryophyllene is the dominant terpene in every cannabis and hemp strain there is — which means some amount of this synergy is baked into the PBX Standard across the line, not confined to one product. Black pepper just happens to be the most concentrated, most familiar source of the same compound already at work in what we grow.
